Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
I’m a pretty lucky guy. I have been fortunate enough to have had many opportunities made available to me throughout my life; I just had to grab ‘em and work hard to achieve success. I believe our local San Francisco community holds a wealth of untapped potential. It is overflowing with people who have the desire and the ability to work hard, but may simply need someone to open that first door to get them barreling down the road to success. When it comes to giving back to the community, my primary focus has been through opening those doors.
Sports have always been a huge part of my life, so in 2005 one of my first official forays into community service was to establish the Bay Area Warriors, Inc., an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit organization. My hope was to use sports as the door to expose kids to college, and to help educate the youth in the local community on both sports and leadership by providing them with top-of-the-line coaching and mentoring. I am honored to continue to serve as executive director of an organization with this mission:
"The mission of the Bay Area Warriors is to educate and help youth develop athletic skills while gaining a level of confidence and self-esteem that they can use on and off the court. The organization aims to serve the youth of San Francisco through their basketball program and running travel teams, leagues, and camps. It is the Bay Area Warriors' goal to mentor as many young men and women in the community as possible, regardless of athletic ability, ethnic background, or economic status."
To date, the Bay Area Warriors organization has impacted approximately 2,000 kids. Over 80 of them have gone on to play sports in college, and one of our own, Armon Johnson, was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2010. Reaching the NBA? Talk about busting through doors!
While the organization’s primary focus is on athletics, many of these go-getting young folks have also showed an interest in the Information Technology field, and Jones IT has been thrilled to provide internship opportunities to those kids. (For more information on what the Bay Area Warriors have been up to lately and what we have planned, check us out at bayareawarriors.org).
In addition to the Bay Area Warriors, Jones IT is proud to partner with several local organizations that also place an emphasis on giving back to the community. Since 2013, we have supported the “Mission Techies” Program offered through the Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA). Their mission is to “achieve economic justice for San Francisco’s low and moderate income Latino families through asset development.” Each Mission Techies cohort is invited to a corporate visit at the Jones IT office, which includes a tour of the headquarters and a Q&A session about what it takes to start and run an IT Consulting business.
I regularly facilitate classes for the Techies on a variety of Information Technology topics including Wifi, Network Security, and Ethical Hacking. Jones IT has provided internships for qualified Techies, and even hired an amazingly hard-working self-starter – Edwin Gonzales - as a full-time Jones IT staff member. How’s that for win-win?
Another local community organization that we support is “<dev/Mission>”, which was started in early 2017 by a team of technology pros who feel passionate about providing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) opportunities for diverse young adults.
In September 2017 we hosted the inaugural <dev/Mission> cohort for their first corporate site visit to Jones IT Headquarters. Similar to our involvement with the Mission Techies, we provide internship opportunities to program participants and have recently hired Marcell Urbina, who brings unparalleled customer service skills and is passionate about community involvement, to the Jones IT crew!
Just like in sports, teamwork makes the dream work, and the way I see it, we’re all on the same team. The fact that I have the opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultural wisdoms of the SF community, share my skills and knowledge, and make a difference in the lives of young people keeps me feeling connected, energized, and positive about the future.
